Galapagos Photography

The Galapagos Islands will offer you some of the most exciting photography you will ever encounter. The wildlife is so tame, you will be able to achieve fantastic photos with the simplest cameras - even a disposable. However, if you are a keen photographer, you will want to bring your best equipment, whether that's film or digital. We also recommend:

  • extra batteries
  • a waterproof camera bag
  • If you choose a 35mm camera, bring more film than you think you will need! We cannot guarantee that the yacht store will stock the film you prefer, or that it has not been affected by the tropical heat. In Galapagos, it's quite possible that a keen photographer can go through 12 - 20 rolls of film in a single day. We recommend ASA 100, 200, and some 400, to take account of the light conditions at different times of day.
  • try out new cameras before you leave home.
  • you may wish to avoid bringing Ektacrome™ as the Galapagos milieu is very “blue”. Kodachrome™ may give you better results.
  • with digital, make sure you have enough memory cards
  • a watertight camera is a good idea - and bring an underwater camera (disposables are very cheap) for use when snorkeling.
  • lenses: one 35mm or less, one 80 to 220mm with a “doubler” or an extra 400mm will be more than enough
  • tripod or monopod/walking stick (easier to carry on the trails)
