Safety in South America

We would advise you to always be alert while sightseeing on the mainland of Ecuador and Peru – watch your belongings, never put your camera down, leave your gear unguarded and always remain attentive and wary of pickpockets.

In Galapagos, incidents are very rare, but you should still be careful and considerate - many of the people you will meet have a low income. Do not leave valuable belongings lying around.

It is recommended that you make two photocopies of your passport ID page, airline ticket, tourdocuments, traveler's check ID numbers and your airline itinerary. Leave one copy of each at home with friends or relatives and take the other copy with you. Keep your copies separate from the originals.

It is compulsory in many countries in South America to carry your passport with you, and you could be asked for it at any time. You will also be required to present your passport when making payments with traveler’s checks or credit cards.
